Hi there, I am Judy VanCanneyt and I am fishing the Women’s Bassmaster Tour this year! I have fished all of my life but most of it was from the bank. My husband Cliff and I got our first boat, a sixteen foot Tracker, about nine years ago and we quickly discovered the wonderful world of tournament fishing. We started fishing a local couples trail and charity tournaments, always as a team. I never had any desire to run the boat, I just wanted to fish and running the trolling motor was work. So I could be found happily fishing away on the back deck of our boat for several years. Then in 2006 the WBT was born! I signed up for all five tournaments as a non-boater, of course, because I only fish from the back of the boat. Well, that year was my wake up call. I weighed fish only two days of the ten that I fished. I realized then that I really like having a say in where and how I fish. Fishing with my husband had spoiled me since we fished as a team with each having a say in what we did. As a non-boater you just go where you are taken and make the best you can of it. If your boater is on fish you are in luck. If she is not then you are in for a very long day. When the second year of the WBT rolled around, Oh Boy, I was a boater for the first time! The first tournament of the season was on the awesome Amistad Lake in south Texas. I had motor trouble every day of practice and thought I was going to have to drop out, but thanks to the monumental efforts of the guys at Two Guys Marine in Del Rio, my boat was running on tournament day. No practice time on an unfamiliar lake does not equal success, but I did weigh fish both days I fished. After my year as a non-boater that was a step up for me. Unfortunately, that was the only tournament I was able to fish in 2007. Luckily, I’m back to fishing this year and plan to have a great 2008 season.
